Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) — Shiragumo Waterfall of Nikkō (1910) Japanese Woodblock Print Tee

Takahashi Hiroaki (1871–1945), who often signed his work as Shōtei, was a prolific Japanese printmaker associated with the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, which revived traditional woodblock techniques with a modern sensibility in the early twentieth century. He designed landscapes, bird-and-flower subjects, and scenes of everyday life, many published through the house of Watanabe Shōzaburō.

This print depicts the Shiragumo ("White Cloud") Waterfall near Nikkō, a mountainous region north of Tokyo long celebrated for its shrines and natural scenery. Cascades of foaming white water pour down dark, textured cliffs, rendered in the bold blues, blacks, and whites characteristic of the genre.

In the lower portion of the composition, two figures in kimono stand on a slender wooden bridge, sheltered beneath brightly patterned parasols of red and yellow. Green foliage and pine clings to the rocky ledge at left, while the surging water dominates the surrounding scene, emphasizing the small human presence against the grandeur of the falls. Japanese characters and the artist's red seal appear at lower right.
