Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) — Okabe in Snow (ca. 1925–1926) Japanese Woodblock Tee

Takahashi Hiroaki, who also worked under the art name Shōtei, was a Japanese printmaker active in the early twentieth century and associated with the shin-hanga ("new prints") revival, which renewed the traditional woodblock craft with fresh attention to atmosphere, light, and weather.

This print, titled "Okabe in Snow," shows a Japanese town scene during a heavy snowfall. A tall vermilion torii gate rises at left, its crossbeams dusted with snow, beside a shop with vertical signboards. Snow-laden rooftops recede into the distance beneath a soft grey sky, and a bare willow tree bends under the weight of the snow, its white branches drooping across the composition.

Two travelers walk along the snowy road in the foreground: one in a dark robe carrying a wrapped bundle, the other in pale garments bearing a load on the back. Both shield themselves under wide woven straw hats as the falling flakes fill the air. The artist's signature and seal appear in the lower-left corner.
