Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) — Black Cat Hissing, Japanese Woodblock Cat Tee

Takahashi Hiroaki, who also worked under the name Shōtei, was a prolific Japanese woodblock print artist associated with the shin-hanga ("new prints") revival of traditional ukiyo-e techniques in the early twentieth century. He is best known for landscapes and animal studies rendered with expressive linework and refined color printing.

This print depicts a black cat crouched low in a defensive, hissing posture — back arched, forelegs stretched forward, mouth open wide to reveal a pink interior and blue-and-red tongue. The cat wears a red collar with a small bell, and its whiskers are drawn as fine pale lines against the dark body. The animal is set against a soft cream ground with a mottled shadow behind it, and Japanese calligraphic inscriptions and red seals appear at the lower right.

The design shows the shin-hanga sensibility for bold, flat silhouettes combined with delicate detail, using the black mass of the cat's body as a striking graphic element against the pale background.
