Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) — Mount Fuji from Lake Yamanaka, Japanese Woodblock Landscape Tee

Takahashi Hiroaki, who worked under the art name Shōtei, was a prolific Japanese woodblock artist associated with the shin-hanga ('new prints') revival of traditional landscape printmaking. He produced numerous serene views of Japanese scenery, and Mount Fuji was a recurring subject in his work.

This print depicts Mount Fuji seen across Lake Yamanaka, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. The composition is framed in classic woodblock fashion by a flowering tree in the foreground at right, its blossoms and dark foliage cutting across the top of the scene. Beyond, the snow-streaked cone of Fuji rises against a graded blue sky dotted with soft clouds.

On the calm blue water below, small sailboats — one with a white sail, another with a red — drift near the far shore, while a figure sits in a moored boat close to the rocky, flower-edged bank in the foreground. Japanese inscriptions and a red seal appear at lower left. The palette of layered blues, the atmospheric gradation, and the flattened framing are hallmarks of the shin-hanga landscape style.
