Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) — Dance for Obon Festival (ca.1927–1935) Japanese Woodblock Tee

Takahashi Hiroaki, who also worked under the name Shōtei, was a Japanese printmaker active in the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement of the early 20th century. This design, titled Dance for Obon Festival, is a color woodblock print dating from roughly 1927 to 1935.

The scene depicts the Bon Odori, the communal dance held during the Obon summer festival. Figures in kimono move in a swirling, rhythmic procession, their dark silhouettes reflected on the ground below. A large full moon glows against a deep blue sky that fades toward a pale horizon, evoking a night-time celebration.

At the center rises a tall decorated standard topped with a small canopy and hung with round paper lanterns painted in reds and warm tones, a bright focal point among the shadowed dancers. The artist's signature and seals appear in the upper right. The atmospheric night setting and lyrical treatment of light are characteristic of shin-hanga sensibilities.
