Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei) — Cedar Tree-Lined Road at Nikkō (1938) Japanese Woodblock Snow Print Tee

Takahashi Hiroaki (1871–1945), who worked under the art name Shōtei, was a prolific Japanese woodblock print designer associated with the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, which revived traditional ukiyo-e printmaking with a modern sensibility for atmosphere, light, and mood. He produced hundreds of landscape designs, many published through Watanabe Shōzaburō.

This design, titled Cedar Tree-Lined Road at Nikkō and dated 1938, depicts the famous avenue of towering cryptomeria (Japanese cedar) trees near Nikkō. The tall trunks rise in a dense stand, their branches laden with fresh snow rendered in soft whites against deep blue-green foliage and a muted twilight sky.

Along the snowy path below, two small figures make their way through the winter scene, one carrying a bundle of firewood on their back. Snug thatched-roof structures peek out among the trees in the middle distance, and gently falling snow fills the air. The vertical composition and quiet, cold palette are characteristic of shin-hanga snow scenes. A signature and publisher's seal appear at the lower right.
