Alphonse Mucha — Interior/Office Sketch, Preparatory Drawing (Art Nouveau)

Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was a Czech artist and one of the defining figures of the Art Nouveau movement, celebrated for his decorative posters, ornamental designs and flowing, organic linework. Beyond his famous colour lithographs, Mucha produced a great many preparatory pencil studies working out compositions, furnishings and architectural detail.

This piece is a pencil sketch — a working drawing rather than a finished plate. It depicts an interior scene: a fitted architectural setting with draped curtains, decorative wall panelling and an ornate scrolled cornice, topped by a row of stylized fixtures. At the centre a rounded medallion frames a reclining draped figure, echoing Mucha's characteristic Art Nouveau motifs. Below, a curved counter or desk sits on a stepped, tiered base with a low stool or bench beside it, resting on a patterned oval floor rug. A small figure leans over the counter.
