Alphonse Mucha — Untitled (1902) Vintage Art Nouveau Woman & Bear Tee
Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was a Czech painter and decorative artist who became one of the most celebrated figures of the Art Nouveau movement. Working largely in Paris around the turn of the twentieth century, he developed an instantly recognizable style built around elegant women, flowing hair, ornamental borders, and harmonized panels of pattern and color.
This print, signed "Mucha" in the lower right and dated 1913 in the artist's hand on the plate, is a characteristic example of his decorative lithographic work. As with much of Mucha's output, the composition fuses figure and ornament into a unified, poster-like design framed by sinuous, plant-derived motifs.
The design shows a dark-haired woman with a long braid, her upper body bare and her lower body wrapped in voluminous blue-green drapery. Beside her, a roaring brown bear rears up, its mouth open and teeth bared. The figures are set against a stylized floral backdrop in coral and pastel tones, enclosed by a curved Art Nouveau border. Below, a panel of peacock-feather-like ornament in golden green and violet leads to a decorative base band, completing the symmetrical framing typical of Mucha.
