Alphonse Mucha — Ilsée, Princesse de Tripoli (1897) Vintage Art Nouveau Illustration Tee
Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was a Czech artist who became one of the defining figures of the Art Nouveau movement, celebrated for his elegant decorative posters, sinuous linework, and idealized female figures framed by intricate ornament. He rose to fame in Paris in the 1890s and his style became so influential it was often simply called "le style Mucha."
This illustration comes from Ilsée, Princesse de Tripoli (1897), a lavishly lithographed book based on Robert de Flers' adaptation of the medieval legend romanticized by Edmond Rostand. Mucha produced numerous color plates for the volume, each combining figural imagery with the flowing, hand-drawn ornamental borders characteristic of his work.
The design shows a crowned, regally adorned woman seated at center, draped in flowing robes and wearing an elaborate jeweled headdress, beaded necklaces, and earrings. Her hands rest upon a pair of lion-head ornaments. Behind her, a second figure leans in close, while two stylized doves with outspread wings appear in the upper corners. The whole composition is enclosed in an elaborate interlacing border of curling, knotted lines in the unmistakable Art Nouveau manner.
