Adolphe Willette — Vintage French Lithograph (1894) Belle Époque Poster Art Tee
Adolphe Willette (1857–1926) was a French painter, illustrator, and lithographer closely associated with the bohemian artistic world of Montmartre during the Belle Époque. He was a prolific contributor to illustrated journals and a designer of posters in an era when color lithography turned the Parisian street into an open-air gallery.
This color lithograph was printed by the Paris house Charles Verneau, whose imprint appears at the lower right ("Imp. CHARLES VERNEAU, 114 Rue Oberkampf, Paris"), and carries Willette's signature at lower left. It reflects the lively, theatrical figural style and the bright lithographic palette characteristic of French poster art of the 1890s.
The design shows a group of costumed figures arranged on a plain ground. At left, a fair-haired woman in a flowing white gown wears a lace headdress; behind her stands a tall figure in a red robe and ermine-trimmed cape resembling royal or theatrical regalia, holding a sword. To the right, a dark-skinned man in flamboyant costume — a red sash and headscarf, an embroidered red waistcoat, green breeches, golden tasseled boots, and a black hat — strides forward carrying a guitar slung over his shoulder.
