The Artist
Takahashi Hiroaki (Shōtei)
The Atmospheric Light of the Shin-Hanga Revival
Takahashi Hiroaki (1871–1945), who also worked under the name Shōtei, was a master Japanese woodblock-print artist and a foundational figure in the Shin-hanga ("new prints") movement. In the early 20th century, as Japan modernized and photography threatened traditional woodblock printing, Shōtei and a handful of visionaries revitalized the craft. They combined classical Ukiyo-e techniques with Western influences, focusing intensely on the dramatic interplay of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective.
The Shōtei Aesthetic
Shōtei’s work is celebrated for its deep moodiness, tranquility, and breathtaking capturing of nature. He was a master of the ephemeral—painting snow falling over quiet villages, a solitary figure walking through a torrential downpour, or a cat silhouetted in the moonlight. His compositions evoke a profound sense of nostalgia and peace, using subtle color gradations to capture the exact feeling of twilight, dawn, and midnight.
Wearable Masterpieces
Traditional Japanese woodblock prints find their perfect modern canvas in our garment-dyed Ivory shirts. The softly washed, garment-dyed fibers mimic the organic quality of traditional washi paper, allowing Shōtei’s subtle mist, soft glow-of-lantern effects, and deep indigo night skies to render with incredible depth. Our soft, breathable prints ensure that iconic designs—like his famous hissing black cat or quiet landscapes—wear comfortably while preserving the delicate, hand-carved textures of the original woodblocks.
